Standardize Tile Adhesive Application, Eliminate Decoration Risks, and Strengthen Home Improvement Quality Defense

2026-04-10

With the upgrading of the home improvement industry, tile adhesive has become a core material for tile installation due to its strong bonding strength and convenient construction. Irregular construction practices frequently lead to problems such as hollow tiles and tile detachment, which not only affect aesthetics but also pose potential safety hazards. Based on on-site practice, eight common problems and their solutions are summarized to help constructors and homeowners avoid risks.

The standardization of tile adhesive construction directly determines the firmness and service life of tile installation. Oversights in base treatment, material application and other links may lead to quality problems. Among them, the selection of core additives for tile adhesive is crucial.

Zhejiang Haishen New Materials Co., Ltd., a professional cellulose ether manufacturer with over 35 years of production experience, specializes in the R&D and production of cellulose ether specially designed for tile adhesive.

This product features excellent thickening, water retention and anti-slipping properties, which can effectively improve the workability of tile adhesive, extend its open time, enhance bonding strength, avoid hidden dangers such as hollowing and detachment, and support standardized construction.

Data shows that 90% of installation problems result from improper material selection or construction errors. Combining high-quality additives with standardized construction is the key to ensuring quality.

For base treatment, highly absorbent substrates will shorten the open time of tile adhesive and easily result in poor bonding. It is recommended to moisten the mortar in advance to reduce water absorption by the substrate, and use a primer if necessary to create a sound foundation for bonding.

Three major misunderstandings in material use must be avoided:

First, hardened mortar must not be re-mixed with water, as this will damage the setting structure and reduce bonding strength.

Second, less water should be added when installing heavy tiles; although this shortens the open time, it improves anti-slipping performance.

Third, tile adhesive should be stored in a dry place and the bag sealed promptly after use to prevent strength reduction caused by the reaction between cement and moisture

During operation, tiles can be adjusted within 10–20 minutes after installation.

After this period, forced adjustment is strictly prohibited. If adjustment is necessary, the old mortar must be removed and replaced with fresh mortar, as forced adjustment will damage the bonding strength.

In addition, it is forbidden to add cement or sand without authorization, so as to avoid damaging the scientific mix ratio and causing hollowing or tile detachment.

Detail treatment is equally critical: Cross spacers should be used during construction to leave grout joints of no less than 2–3 mm, providing space for thermal expansion and contraction of tiles. Vibration should be avoided during the 24-hour curing period after installation to prevent damage to the bonding structure. Standardized construction can control the hollowing rate within 3%.

Standardized construction is a prerequisite for ensuring home improvement safety. It is hoped that construction enterprises will strengthen training and homeowners will conduct proper supervision, so as to jointly avoid potential hazards and promote the high-quality development of the home improvement industry.
